Can you open Stripe from mainland China?
Short answer: not directly. Stripe's official global availability list (stripe.com/global) does not include mainland China — Hong Kong is listed separately as "Hong Kong SAR" and does not extend to mainland entities. You either form an entity somewhere supported, or you skip Stripe for now — which, for most people, is the right call.
Why a mainland entity can't sign up
Stripe onboards by business country: you must submit that country's registration documents, tax ID and a local bank account. Mainland China is not selectable in the signup flow at all. "Workarounds" using borrowed addresses or someone else's entity fail Stripe's verification checks, and a frozen account puts your balance at risk. Don't.
Path 1: A US company via Stripe Atlas
Atlas is Stripe's own product for foreign founders: a one-time $500 forms a Delaware C-corp or LLC online, including the state filing, an EIN, founder equity paperwork, and the first year of registered-agent service (about $100/year after that, plus Delaware's own annual taxes and your US tax filings). The US company can then open a regular Stripe account. Prices checked 2026-10-28 on stripe.com/atlas.
Worth it if you already have steady overseas revenue or are building a fundable company. Not worth it just to collect your first few hundred dollars — the $500 is only the entry ticket.
Path 2: A Hong Kong company
Hong Kong is on Stripe's list, so a Hong Kong limited company can open a Hong Kong Stripe account. But incorporation, banking and annual audit/tax filing are ongoing costs, and bank onboarding keeps getting stricter. We have not run this route ourselves, so we don't publish step-by-step claims — just budget for "can register" and "can maintain cheaply" as two different numbers.
Path 3: Skip Stripe — let a platform collect for you
| Channel | Official fee | You keep on $29 | How money reaches you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gumroad (direct) | 10% + $0.50 per sale | $24.46 | Payout to PayPal once you pass $100 |
| Payhip (Free plan) | 5% per sale, processing extra | $26.41 | Payout to PayPal / Stripe |
| PayPal direct | Your account's commercial rate | Varies | Wire to a Chinese bank: $35 per wire, $150 minimum |
Worked examples are arithmetic on the official rates above, not an earnings promise. Payhip sales also carry card processing (roughly 2.9% + $0.30), so the real take is slightly lower. Rates checked 2026-10-28; see our payments map for sources.
You pay a few points more than raw Stripe, and in exchange you can sell today — no $500 incorporation, no foreign entity to maintain. Revisit Atlas once monthly volume is consistently above a thousand dollars.
How to choose
- No sales yet: Path 3. Validate that strangers pay you first; the fee difference on small volume is a few dollars.
- Steady volume, subscriptions/SaaS: Run the Atlas math properly, including yearly maintenance.
- Already have a Hong Kong entity: Path 2 as a bonus — don't maintain a company just for Stripe.
